Derek Greenwood, a Washington State University Tri-Cities student pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a focus on Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, has been honored for his dedication to mental healthcare in rural communities. Raised in a small town with limited access to psychiatric care, Greenwood received the Lois Spratlen Foundation Scholarship for his commitment to serving underserved areas with similar struggles. In addition to his studies, he works as an emergency room registered nurse and a clinical instructor. Greenwood’s personal experience with substance abuse and homelessness allows him to connect with patients compassionately. Upon graduation in 2025, he intends to work for a rural healthcare organization in eastern Washington, ideally one where he can ride his horse to work.
