The Washington State University College of Nursing proudly announces the recipients of its 2024 student awards, celebrating the exceptional achievements of its students who have demonstrated dedication, compassion, and leadership in the field of nursing.

Brian Olsen Wins the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students

Brian Olsen, a standout student from the WSU Spokane campus, has been honored with the DAISY Award for his exemplary commitment and compassionate approach to nursing. His instructors highlight his engagement and academic integrity as key factors in his success. “Brian approaches every person and patient with compassion and empathy, creating genuine connections,” shared one of his instructors. His efforts in community health and advocacy have set a high standard for his peers.

Jeanette Gordon Recognized with the Bachelor of Science Nursing (PL-BSN) Clinical Excellence Award

From the WSU Tri-Cities campus, Jeanette Gordon has been awarded the PL-BSN Clinical Excellence Award. Returning to nursing as a second career, Jeanette has excelled both as a student and a leader. “Jeannette’s ability to manage time while excelling as a dedicated mom and student stands out distinctly,” remarked her Pediatric Instructor. Her proactive approach in her clinical placements has earned her high praise from preceptors across various settings.

Kevin Jurado Honored as the Outstanding Prelicensure PL-BSN Student

Kevin Jurado, also from Tri-Cities, receives the Outstanding PL-BSN Student Award for his dynamic leadership and community service. “Kevin has been a force of nature, from organizing charity events to leading the Crimson Scrubs student organization,” noted his advisor. His commitment to clinical excellence and his growth as a leader have been inspirational to his cohort.

Julia Scott Awarded for Outstanding Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Student

Julia Scott from the WSU Vancouver campus is the recipient of the Outstanding DNP Student Award. Described as a leader in every facet of her academic and community involvement, Julia has significantly contributed to public health and nursing education. “Julia’s leadership work related to reproductive health access in communities of color was crucial,” explained her advisor. Her dedication to mentoring and supporting fellow students has been exemplary.

Karen Watarida Receives the Diversity Award

Karen Watarida from the WSU Spokane campus has been honored with the Diversity Award for her outstanding efforts to promote inclusivity and cultural understanding. “Karen has gone out of her way to connect with students and staff from diverse backgrounds, making everyone feel welcomed and included,” a peer shared. Her commitment to fostering an inclusive environment has been impactful within the WSU College of Nursing community.

These awards reflect the commitment of WSU College of Nursing to fostering excellence and leadership in nursing education. Congratulations to all the award recipients for their outstanding contributions to the field of nursing and their communities.
