Controversies at the Intersection of Health & Energy: What are Resilience and Vulnerability, Anyway?

November 7, 2023 @ 4:10 pm - 5:10 pm

Center for Environmental Research, Education and Outreach Seminar
2023 Environment & Health Series

Power outages have been on the rise, largely due to extreme weather and the progression of fossil-fueled climate change. Recent research has highlighted the differential impact of power outages on marginalized populations, though methodological challenges and inconsistencies remain. We will discuss the methods and results of a recent ecological study on power outages and social vulnerability in Washington State. Then we will take a deeper dive into the challenges with the operationalization of both outages and social vulnerability and introduce ethical controversies related to interdisciplinary interpretations of climate resilience and vulnerability. Interactive discussion will be invited.

Dr. Claire Richards is most interested in palliative care and how health systems can better support vulnerable populations in the face of an accelerating climate crisis. Claire possesses expertise in both qualitative and quantitative methods and has utilized large clinical data sets and basic natural language processing in her research.
