Dr. Ekaterina Burduli is an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at Washington State University. Dr. Burduli’s primary research focuses on the birth outcomes of women who use substances during pregnancy and their infants, and the development of novel interventions for perinatal women with substance use disorders. Dr. Burduli’s work will lead to a better and more thorough examination of the birth experience among substance using mothers and holds great promise to identify points of intervention, improve health outcomes for both mother and child, and ultimately, reduce health disparities for substance using perinatal women and their infants. She has over 38 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to and is leading several NIH-funded grants as well, most recently an NIDA-funded Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) that will adapt an existing mobile Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome tool for high-risk pregnant women and assess its usability, acceptability, and feasibility in a small randomized controlled trial. Dr. Burduli also has a high level of statistical methodology expertise in psychometrics, structural equation modeling, and clinical trial data analysis.

Effective Caregiving for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: Development of an Instructional Mobile Technology Platform for High-Risk Pregnant Women (NIDA)
This Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) will build upon my previous training and allow me to pursue training goals of becoming an independent investigator with an established program of research by completing a project to adapt an existing mobile Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) tool for high-risk pregnant women and assess its usability, acceptability, and feasibility in a small randomized controlled trial. It also provides career development and training activities that will enhance my expertise in the development, implementation, and testing of interventions for perinatal women using substances.

Administrative supplement to: Effective Caregiving for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: Development of an Instructional Mobile Technology Platform for High-Risk Pregnant Women (NIDA)
This supplement will support my Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) project and its associated increased costs while I am on maternity leave.
Role: Principal Investigator

R34MH129332 (Oluwoye) $688,500 05/01/2022-04/30/2025
Family Peer Navigator for Psychosis: Increasing Access and Initial Engagement in Coordinated Specialty Care Programs for Racial and Ethnic Minorities (NIMH)
We will develop a culturally informed Family Peer Navigator for Psychosis model for racial and ethnic minority youth and their families, and evaluate its acceptability, feasibility, and appropriateness in coordinated specialty care programs.
Role: Co-Investigator

Contingency Management for Heavy Drinkers on Smoking Cessation (NCI)
This project seeks to replicate and extend our previous findings, which demonstrate that applying CM to target the use of alcohol can produce non-targeted reductions in smoking. Given the synergistic neurochemical and behavioral relationship between alcohol and tobacco use, confronting this relationship with a synergistic therapy should provide an effective dual treatment.
Role: Co- Investigator/Biostatistician

R01AG071677 (Co-PIs: Barbosa-Leiker, Suchy-Dicey) $1,715,880, 06/01/21–03/30/24
Psychological risk factors, quality of life, community, and brain aging in American Indians: The Strong Heart Study (NIA)
The goal of this study is to test the longitudinal relationship among stress, depression, and substance use with cognitive performance using the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery and establish normative standards for the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery specific to AI adults
Role: Co-Investigator/Statistician

R01 PA-19-055 (PI: McPherson) $2,407,796, 09/01/20-08/31/25
Zonisamide for the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder in the Addiction Neuroclinical Assessment Framework (NIAAA)
The goal of this study is to complete a double-blind, placebo-controlled RCT to evaluate the ability of Zonisamide (ZON) to significantly decrease alcohol use among treatment-seeking AUD adults. This project focuses on the efficacy of a promising pharmacotherapy for AUDs using a placebo-controlled design that will rigorously measure alcohol use and medication adherence.
Role: Co- Investigator/Biostatistician
