Every year from May 6–12, we pause to celebrate the extraordinary dedication, expertise, and heart that nurses bring to our health care system and communities. This National Nurses Week, we join the American Nurses Association in honoring #ThePowerOfNurses—and here in Spokane, we’re shining a literal spotlight on these healthcare heroes.

On May 6, the Spokane Pavilion will be illuminated in honor of nurses, with additional lightings planned at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, MultiCare Deaconess Hospital, Multicare Valley Hospital, Multicare Rockwood Clinic, the WSU Spokane Center for Clinical Research and Simulation (CCRS), and Steam Plant Restaurant & Brew Pub throughout the week (see complete map for locations). These bright displays are part of the national “Nurses Light Up the Sky” campaign, which aims to illuminate 100 landmarks across the country in tribute to nurses’ impact.

At the WSU College of Nursing, we’re proud to lead the way in preparing Washington’s nursing workforce:

  • We graduate the largest nursing classes in Washington State.
  • 84% of our graduates stay to work in-state, with that number rising to over 90% when nearby regions like Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Portland, Oregon are counted.
  • 80% of our BSN graduates are working in an RN position within three months of graduation.
  • As the U.S. faces growing demand for nurses—194,500 openings projected per year through 2033—our graduates are stepping into leadership roles in hospitals, clinics, schools, research labs, and communities across the Northwest and beyond.

Everyone can join in Nurses Week—whether you’re a nurse, student, patient, or community member. Participate in ANA’s national webinars, snap a photo of the Spokane Pavilion lighting, or simply say thank you to a nurse who’s made a difference in your life.
