Dr. Alison Kirby: A Champion for Adolescent Health

Dr. Alison Kirby

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the contributions of women who have transformed lives through their dedication and advocacy. Dr. Alison Kirby, a retired pediatrician, stands out for her unwavering commitment to improving health care access for vulnerable adolescents in Walla Walla, Washington.

Dr. Kirby played a key role in establishing The Health Center at Lincoln High School, a school-based clinic designed to support students facing extraordinary life challenges. Many of these students—struggling with foster care, addiction, incarceration, and unstable family environments—were at high risk of dropping out. Recognizing the critical role health care plays in academic success, Dr. Kirby helped create a space where students could receive medical, mental health, and social support services in a safe and accessible environment.

Her work aligned with emerging research on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which highlighted the long-term health impacts of trauma. The Health Center model addressed these challenges head-on, ensuring that students had access to physical and mental health care without barriers. The documentary Paper Tigers (2015) offers an in-depth look at Lincoln High School’s approach to trauma-informed education and its impact on students.

What began as a single health center has since expanded to multiple schools in Walla Walla, demonstrating the success and necessity of school-based clinics for at-risk youth. Notably, an all-women administrative team currently leads The Health Center, continuing Dr. Kirby’s legacy of compassionate, community-driven health care.

Dr. Kirby’s dedication underscores the power of women in leadership, health care, and education—changing lives by meeting young people where they are and ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive.
