More than 90 humans and 110 dogs and cats received healthcare at a special clinic for homeless and low-income people and their pets held Friday on the campus of WSU Health Sciences Spokane.
It was the fourth Healthy People + Healthy Pets clinic offered by students and faculty of the WSU College of Nursing and the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine. The number of patients served was second only to the inaugural event held in January 2018.
The first patients arrived more than an hour before the clinic’s scheduled 9 a.m. opening. They came for free vaccinations, health screenings and simple treatments for both people and pets.
Thanks to the support of the MultiCare Community Partnership Fund, people who attended the clinic also were offered coffee, snacks, hats and gloves, and supplies for their pets such as warm coats, harnesses, leashes and pet food.
Gail Oneal, clinical associate professor at the College of Nursing, and Raelynn Farnsworth, clinical associate professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, organize the clinic. About 20 nursing and veterinary medicine students provide care under the guidance of faculty from the two colleges.
