Title of talk: Common interdisciplinary research practices and their lessons for mentoring and education
For this presentation we take a look at some of the typical practices researchers in various fields use to engage in interdisciplinary interaction, focusing particularly on the cognitive difficulties of engaging in interdisciplinary work, and unpack some of the implications of doing so when it comes to mentoring new researchers and educating students for 21st century science and engineering.

Miles MacLeod currently an assistant professor for philosophy of science at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Over the past 10 years he has been engaged in the study of interdisciplinary research practices in various scientific fields with a focus on the common methodological and cognitive strategies often applied in interdisciplinary engagement. Through collaboration with educational scientists these results of this research have been applied extensively in higher education, given interdisciplinary skills are now a key demand in many programmes.
