Livingstone Chronicles

Arrived in Livingstone

As our journey through Zambia gradually entered its final chapter, the pace began to shift. Every study abroad experience tells a story, and some chapters leave a lasting impression. The intensity and demands of the weeks prior gave way to new opportunities for reflection, exploration, and appreciation for the country’s abundant natural beauty.

As our group arrived in Livingstone, we found ourselves in a unique space between said reflection and appreciation; still harboring the lessons of the past few weeks all the while experiencing an entirely different side to Zambia. The days ahead provided opportunities to celebrate our journey, strengthen friendships, and take in remarkable landscapes and wildlife that undoubtedly make this country so special.

Golden hour on the Zambezi River did not disappoint. As we cruised along the river, cameras were constantly in hand and every movement along the shoreline sparked excitement as we searched for wildlife. Whether spotting animals in the distance or sharing the moment with one another, the evening offered a memorable start to our time in Livingstone and built anticipation for the adventures that awaited us in Botswana’s Game Camp the following day. By the end of the cruise it was hard to tell whether we were watching for the river or the sky. As the sun dipped below the horizon, shades of orange and gold reflected across the water, bringing the evening to a close in spectacular fashion. It was the perfect ending to a memorable night on the Zambezi. Photo: Abdinasir Hussein.

Our safari experience started long before we even spotted our first animal. After an early morning departure from Livingstone, we crossed into Botswana through the Kazungula Border Post eager to see what the day had in store for us. The anticipation only grew as we made our way toward the game reserve and prepared for our first wildlife sightings. Photo: Abdinasir Hussein.

Not long after entering the reserve, we encountered our first wildlife sightings of the day. Seeing impalas freely roaming their natural habitat was an exciting introduction to the incredible diversity of animals found throughout Botswana’s protected areas and set the stage for the many memorable encounters that followed including a majority of the big 5- elephants, lions, and water buffaloes in addition to monkeys, kudu’s, squirrels, elephants, hippo's, and crocodiles among others. Our day in Botswana concluded with unforgettable wildlife sightings and a deeper appreciation for the land that supports some of Africa’s most iconic animals. From crossing the border to exploring the reserve, each moment offered a new perspective on the region’s natural beauty. The safari quickly became one of the highlights of our time in Southern Africa and an experience our group will not soon forget. Photo: Abdinasir Hussein.

While our adventures on the river and in the reserve provided incredible memories, one final experience still awaited us. Next, we visit Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. There we will be able to witness firsthand the power and beauty that have made it one of Africa’s most celebrated destinations.
