On November 7, 2024 the WSU College of Nursing and College of Veterinary Medicine teamed up once again for the annual Healthy People + Healthy Pets event on the WSU Spokane campus. This community-focused initiative provided essential health care services to individuals living in shelters, transitional housing, and those currently experiencing homelessness, along with free veterinary care for their pets.

Held at the WSU Spokane Campus Center for Clinical Research and Simulation, the event offered free health assessments, check-ups, and resources to 57 attendees and their pets

“I always mark my calendar for this event because I wouldn’t be able to afford yearly pet care otherwise”, shared a community member.

The Healthy People + Healthy Pets program demonstrated WSU’s commitment to addressing health disparities and supporting community well-being through collaborative efforts. The event not only served those in need but also provided valuable hands-on experience for WSU students in nursing and veterinary medicine. Attendees expressed their gratitude for the care they received.

Students and faculty found the experience deeply rewarding.

One first-year nursing student shared, “this is what nursing is all about – an opportunity to give back to the community.”

The event was made possible through the generous support of sponsors, including STCU, the Spokane Regional Health District, Range Community Clinic, and the dedicated faculty and students from WSU’s College of Nursing and College of Veterinary Medicine. Through partnerships like these, WSU continues to make a positive impact in Spokane, supporting both people and pets in need.
