Our work extends beyond Washington State, as demonstrated by our faculty’s involvement with Indigenous communities in Peru.
The WSU College of Nursing’s engagement in Peru has provided transformative experiences for students, blending cultural immersion with hands-on healthcare practice. From hiking the heights of Machu Picchu to conducting clinics in remote jungle communities, students encountered both the natural beauty and health challenges faced by locals.
…not only will they look for examples of integrity, caring, altruism, social justice and maximizing health potential, they will strive to live those values [during] their three weeks in Peru.”
Sarah Griffith, Instructor (retired), WSU College of Nursing
Working alongside Indigenous communities and learning about Inca agricultural ingenuity, students deepened their understanding of holistic health practices. They also embraced core nursing values—caring for patients, fostering social justice, and maximizing health potential—through education, outreach, and collaborative care in clinics and schools. These cross-cultural encounters foster not only professional growth but also lasting connections, enriching both the students and the communities they served.
The next trip is tentatively planned for the summer of 2026. Watch the WSU College of Nursing website and social media for updates.
