Amerigroup Washington Provides $50,000 to Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarships for Rural Washington

Amerigroup Washington is dedicated to closing the gap in rural health disparities for residents across the state of Washington. The organization recently provided a gift of $50,000 to the WSU College of Nursing to establish an endowed scholarship for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students. Healthcare quality improves when people can access care in their own community, where providers understand the people, their challenges, culture, beliefs, and values. A shortage of healthcare professionals in distressed areas makes it difficult for people to obtain the personalized care they need. This is especially true for rural areas, where the number of healthcare providers has declined in recent years.

WSU College of Nursing is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of those living in rural Washington and addressing gaps in healthcare delivery in these regions of our state. The generous gift from Amerigroup will support DNP students enrolled in our Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program who are committed to working in rural and underserved communities upon graduation. We are grateful for their support to prepare our students to deliver high quality, culturally aligned care for those requiring services.

A primary goal is that this scholarship support will encourage the DNP Program graduates to serve in rural areas, particularly those who are first-generation students, or those from historically under-represented populations. The WSU College of Nursing appreciates the support provided to our DNP students, and our rural communities, by Amerigroup Washington.
