Highlights

Dr. Tracy Klein and colleagues Dr. Janessa Graves, Dr. Dawn DeWitt, Dr. Mary Paine and Dr. Patricia Pearce would like to announce an interdisciplinary speaker series featuring international and national experts in the health sciences focusing on mentoring.

Each speaker will discuss the benefits and challenges of working interprofessionally, especially as these activities are recognized in promotion and scholarship.

The series will kick off on January 23, 2023 from 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM on Zoom with Dr. Miles MacLeod from the University of Twente in Eschende, Netherlands. Dr. MacLeod is a philosophy professor who writes extensively about the basic assumptions we each make within our own discipline that can create barriers to interprofessional work. He is the author of “What Makes Interdisciplinarity Difficult? Some Consequences of Domain Specificity in Interdisciplinary Practice”.

Speakers in the series include:

  • Dr. Mary Peace McCrae and Dr. Kristen Zimmerman, pharmacist authors of “Identifying Components of Success within Health Sciences Mentoring Programs through Review of the Literature” from Virginia Commonwealth University (January 30, 2023 from 9:00 – 10:30 AM).
  • Dr. Marvella Ford, public health researcher and endowed chair of the Cancer Disparities Center at the Medical University of South Carolina (February 6, 2023 from 9:00 – 10:30 AM).
  • Dr. Kathleen Sutcliffe, Professor in the Carey School of Business at Johns Hopkins University and author of “Managing the Unexpected: Resilient Performance in an Age of Uncertainty” (February 13, 2023 from 10:00 – 11:30 AM).
  • Dr. Elda Ramirez, Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of Texas, Houston, founder of the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (February 20, 2023 from 9:00 – 10:30 AM).
  • Dr. Richard James, Professor from the University of Melbourne, author of “The Eleven Effective Practices of Supervision”. Dr. James will speak on March 28, 2023 from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM with a workshop scheduled to apply his principles to mentoring others led by Dr. Dawn DeWitt and Dr. Tracy Klein from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
  • Drs. Dawn DeWitt and Tracy Klein will co-facilitate a workshop on March 28, 2023 from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
    Dr. DeWitt and Dr. Klein will lead a workshop following Dr James’ presentation which applies the principles of postgraduate supervision to audience led cases and dilemmas in mentoring..
