The final group of students arrived on Wednesday just after dinner. Everyone experienced decent flights, no delays or problems, no lost luggage and smooth passport control for the most part.

Our first day was spent on orientation to our host institution with a walking tour and cultural education. We spent time reviewing our agenda regarding clinical rotations and afternoon activities. The afternoons will be designed for students to be able to explore the culture and view the people and community through a community nurse’s lens. They will participate in things such as a visit to a home, school and clinic in the village, a tour of a local business and an after-school sports program with the children. The students will also be teaching the weekly health topic to the local school. Their first afternoon was given to them to relax and unwind after the whirlwind trip and busy orientation day. Jet lag is real and students were advised to try not to nap, so many of them decided to walk around the area and explore.

This weekend will see a very busy time with an overnight trip to a game camp, a stop at Lake Kashiba on way home, an opportunity to experience a church service in the village conducted in the local language: Bemba, and a pick up soccer game in the afternoon. Clinical rotations will begin on Monday, June 8.

Students will begin posting their own blog posts starting Sunday, June 7.
