Advisor Spotlights

National Advisor Appreciation Day
National Advisor Appreciation Day

Behind every successful nursing student is an advisor who helped guide the way. Across Washington State University College of Nursing, advisors support students through decisions, challenges, and milestones. In honor of National Advisor Appreciation Day on April 21, meet a few of the people who help Coug Nursing students stay on track and reach their goals.

Jenny Schrock

Jenny Schrock

Academic Coordinator, Vancouver campus

Jenny Schrock’s path into advising started as a student.
“As a student 25 years ago, I got a work study position in an advising office, and I liked it so much I’ve worked in student services ever since.”

She values connection above all else.
“Talking with students, getting to know them, and helping them reach their goals is what I enjoy most.”

When students feel stuck, she focuses on listening first.
“I care, listen closely, and provide them with resources and options.”

Moments at graduation stand out the most.
“Every time a student hugs me at graduation.”

Her advice is simple and direct.
“Reach out to your faculty. They really do care and want you to be successful.”

Wendy Ovall

Graduate Senior Advisor

Wendy Ovall is driven by student success.
“What I enjoy most is helping students achieve their dreams.”

Her advising style centers on giving students space to think.
“I let them talk it out. Sometimes they just need a listening ear.”

She often prepares graduate students for the reality of the workload.
“I encourage them to reduce their work hours, if possible, when starting the program. The coursework is demanding and takes time to adjust.”

Kristie Brink

Kristie Brink

Undergraduate Senior Advisor, Spokane campus

Kristie Brink’s experience as a student shaped her approach.
“I remember feeling overwhelmed and lost about degree requirements. I want to make sure students get their questions answered and feel supported.”

She values the variety each day brings.
“I like seeing students reach their goals and become successful nurses.”

Her role is to guide, not solve.
“I help students see a new perspective so they can solve the problem themselves.”

One student experience stands out.
“A student struggled with English communication. After connecting her with an ESL specialist, she improved significantly and is now set to graduate.”

Her advice focuses on balance.
“Do one thing each day that makes you happy that is not school related.”

Lesley Hernandez-Silva

Lesley Hernandez-Silva

Director of the Center for Student Excellence, Spokane campus

Lesley Hernandez-Silva’s path into advising is personal.
“As a first-generation college student, I didn’t know how to navigate college. An advisor took the time to guide me and became my mentor. That experience showed me how powerful advising can be.”

She values growth in students.
“Seeing students succeed and grow in confidence is what I enjoy most.”

She helps students simplify what feels overwhelming.
“I remind them they don’t have to have everything figured out. We break things down step by step and make a plan together.”

One story stays with her.
“A student who faced academic, family, and cultural barriers recently earned their LPN. They never gave up on their goal.”

Her advice is about staying in your own lane.
“Do not compare your timeline to anyone else’s.”

Mary Gonzalez

Mary Gonzalez

Undergraduate Campus Advisor, Yakima campus

Mary Gonzalez is driven by advocacy.
“I was inspired to become an advisor to advocate for students and be someone they can reach out to for help.”

She enjoys seeing long-term growth.
“I love working with students from pre-nursing to graduation and seeing them evolve into their nursing roles.”

Her approach starts with listening.
“I listen to their story, then we brainstorm options, so they feel part of the solution.”

One moment stands out.
“A student came in after working in the fields, unsure if his grades were enough. We talked through options, and he pursued nursing. At graduation, he thanked me in front of everyone.”

Her advice is clear.
“You are never too old to pursue your dream of becoming a nurse.”
