The WSU College of Nursing welcomed its Spring cohort of BSN students with a two-day orientation designed to support academic readiness, clinical preparation, and connection across campuses.
107 students gathered in Spokane, Yakima, and Tri-Cities, with a mix of in-person and shared Zoom sessions that brought the cohort together as one community.
A Focus on Success From Day One
Orientation began with sessions centered on personal and academic success. Students completed check-in and photos, met peers through icebreakers, and learned what professionalism looks like in the nursing program.
They were introduced to key systems such as CastleBranch, explored nursing and library resources, and received practical student success tips to help them manage the demands of the program. Campus-specific student panels gave new students a chance to hear honest perspectives from those already further along in the program.
Midday gatherings allowed students to connect with faculty and advisors over lunch before picking up ATI book bundles that will support their coursework.
Did you know?

WSU College of Nursing students use ATI, a learning and assessment platform that supports coursework, builds clinical judgment, and helps students prepare for the NCLEX. Students receive ATI resources starting at orientation and use them throughout the BSN program.

Preparing for Clinical Practice
The second day shifted toward clinical readiness and expectations. Students learned more about the first semester (J1) curriculum, ATI resources, and strategies for success in both academic and clinical settings.
Sessions covered clinical preparation requirements and introduced students to practice and simulation environments, with shared Zoom presentations and optional in-person tours where available. The day concluded with American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for students.
Orientation is an important step in helping students understand the academic, clinical, and personal demands of nursing school. Through the Center for Student Excellence, our team works really hard to ensure students feel supported and confident as they move through the program – and reminding them they’re not navigating it alone!
