School Nurse Spotlight: Diana Torres Ochoa

Diana Torres Ochoa, School Nurse.

The Heart of the School, and the Voice for the Smallest Students

Diana Torres Ochoa became a school nurse to better align with her family’s schedule—but it quickly became more than just a job. “The school schedule is perfect for our family,” says Torres Ochoa, a mother of four. “But I found I love school nursing even more than working in the hospital.”

Now in her second year, Torres Ochoa serves one elementary school and sees herself as more than a nurse—she’s an advocate. “We’re not just here for Band-Aids. We’re the voice for students, especially the little ones who can’t always speak up for themselves.”

She cherishes the connections she’s built. “Last year, on School Nurse Appreciation Day, the kindergartners made me cards. It was the cutest thing ever. I still have them.”

Navigating communication among families, teachers, and providers is her biggest challenge—but also a powerful part of her impact. Torres Ochoa takes pride in helping students access doctors’ appointments, stay up to date on vaccines, and learn about preventative health.

Torres Ochoa also received support through the Linda Bordwell Educational Fund for School Nursing, which helped her complete the School Nursing: Preparation for Initial Certification course at WSU. “As a working mom with four kids, the cost and flexibility of the program made it possible,” she says. “I loved that it was online and via Zoom. It was so helpful and opened my eyes to things I hadn’t even considered—like the importance of using inclusive language and being aware of gender identity with younger students.”

“The kids make everything worth it. They’re amazing to work with, and I love being their voice.”
