Black Maternal Health Week 2025: Honoring the Art of Birth and the Road to Liberation

Black Maternal Health Week 2025 (April 11–17)

Black Maternal Health Week (April 11–17) is underway, and the Shades of Motherhood Network (SOMN) is leading the charge with a powerful series of community events themed “Art of Birth: The Road to Liberation.” From art exhibits and family gatherings to spoken word and policy discussions, the week uplifts Black birthing people and centers conversations around birth justice, maternal equity, and healing. Highlights include the Birth Justice Film screening on April 15, and Movement with Joy, a doula-led Zumba session on April 17. These events aim to foster solidarity, empower families, and amplify the lived experiences of Black mothers and birthing people.

Founded and led by maternal health advocate Stephaine Courtney, SOMN works to ensure that Black mothers receive the care, dignity, and community support they deserve. The organization’s mission is echoed in academic research as well—Washington State University College of Nursing honors student Bianca Gherghe ’25 recently presented a research poster exploring mental health service disparities among pregnant women in the NIH All of Us Research Program, noting the unique barriers faced by Black mothers. This week’s events—and the work of scholars and advocates alike—shine a light on urgent gaps and celebrate the collective movement toward maternal justice.
