Dr. Linda D. Scott: Leading Nursing into the Future with Research and Inclusivity

Dr. Linda Scott (1956 – present) is a distinguished nurse scientist, educator, and leader whose career seamlessly integrates research, advocacy, and leadership. As the President of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) and the Dean and Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Nursing, she has made significant contributions to nursing education, healthcare policy, and workforce development.

Transforming Nursing Through Research

Dr. Scott is a renowned nurse scientist whose research on nurse fatigue and sleep deprivation has directly influenced policies that improve hospital work environments and patient care. Her studies have demonstrated the dangers of prolonged work hours, linking nurse fatigue to increased patient safety risks and adverse outcomes. Her work has led to improved staffing guidelines, workplace protections, and policy changes that benefit both healthcare workers and the patients they serve.

Championing Equity and Inclusion

As Dean and Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Nursing, Dr. Scott has been a tireless advocate for economically disadvantaged students and diversity efforts within nursing education. She has worked to ensure that nursing leadership reflects the communities it serves, opening doors for nurses from underrepresented backgrounds and creating initiatives to support student success and workforce diversity.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Scott advocated for in-person experiential learning, ensuring that nursing students could continue their hands-on education safely. This critical decision allowed students to maintain clinical competencies and gain real-world experience, preparing them to meet the challenges of the evolving healthcare landscape.

Shaping the Future of the American Academy of Nursing

Now serving as President of the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Scott is leading efforts to modernize the Fellow selection process and create a more inclusive and diverse nursing leadership network. She is spearheading initiatives to amplify outreach and support accomplished nursing leaders who drive change in healthcare policy, education, and practice.

A Legacy of Leadership and Policy Change

Dr. Scott’s commitment to leadership extends beyond the AAN. She has played key roles in several influential organizations, including the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Over the course of her career, she has received numerous honors and awards, recognizing her contributions to nursing education, research, and advocacy.

Dr. Linda D. Scott is not just shaping nursing today—she is laying the groundwork for a more inclusive, research-driven, and equitable profession.
