In the fall of 2025, the WSU College of Nursing’s Center for Experiential Learning (CEL) Simulation team introduced Virtual Reality (VR) simulation to pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students across the Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Yakima campuses. Partnering with junior-level students and faculty, the CEL team set out to explore how immersive digital environments could enhance traditional simulation and transform nursing education.

Using UbiSim, a nursing-specific VR simulation platform, paired with Meta Quest 3S headsets, the pilot allowed students to step into lifelike clinical scenarios that mirrored real patient encounters. UbiSim’s intuitive system empowers nurse educators to design simulations that strengthen students’ clinical judgment, teamwork, and communication skills—without requiring complex setup or coding. Within these immersive environments, learners practiced assessment, prioritization, and patient-centered care while building confidence and competence for real-world practice.

The pilot provided students with opportunities to practice communication, clinical reasoning, and prioritization in lifelike scenarios—all within a safe, virtual space. Participants described the experience as both engaging and innovative, noting that it made learning feel “real” while allowing them to repeat and refine their skills. Faculty and simulation specialists gathered detailed feedback on the technical setup and activity design, creating a strong foundation for expanding VR within future courses.

“The pilot allowed us to evaluate how this technology can fit into our curriculum and support student learning across campuses,” said Emily Davies, RN, MSN, Assistant Teaching Professor. “Student feedback confirmed what we hoped—that virtual reality could make simulation even more interactive and accessible.”

As the team reviews outcomes and prepares for next steps, CEL staff are already planning to integrate VR into additional simulations and course modules.

Virtual reality opens the door to consistent, high-quality experiences for every student—no matter where they’re located. It’s an exciting evolution in how we prepare future nurses.

The success of this pilot marks an important step forward in WSU’s commitment to advancing hands-on learning through emerging technology. By leveraging platforms like UbiSim, the College of Nursing will continue to build on this momentum—ensuring Coug Nurses are equipped with cutting-edge tools to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care.
