School Nurse Spotlight: Sarah Beck

School Nurse, Sarah Beck

A Safe Haven for Students, One Relationship at a Time

Sarah Beck took a unique path into nursing. A collegiate softball player studying exercise science, she later completed an entry-level master’s in nursing at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) to pursue her true calling. After years in pediatric hospital nursing and starting a family, she found her home in school nursing.

Overseeing two schools—including one with significant need—Beck treats allergies, supports students with food sensitivities, and advocates for kids impacted by environmental triggers. “School nursing benefits the whole community,” she says. “We alleviate barriers and provide care where it’s needed most.”

“Being a school nurse is a chance to build trust and care for students over time. I love being someone they can rely on.”

What Beck values most is the connection. “I love being a safe haven. Sometimes students come to me just to calm down so they can return to class. They trust me in a way that doesn’t happen in a hospital.”

With support from the Linda Bordwell Educational Fund for School Nursing, Sarah Beck completed her certification through WSU’s fully online program. “It was flexible, informative, and gave me insight into how school nursing varies across regions. I’d definitely recommend it.”
