Current Funding Priorities

The College of Nursing identifies new priorities each year through thoughtful consideration. To further our mission, we invite you to help the programs grow in excellence by supporting the following initiatives.

Dean’s Excellence Fund

Funding is used at the dean’s discretion for the College’s most urgent needs in teaching, scholarship, and research. These unrestricted funds enable the dean to act immediately to meet unanticipated needs or opportunities to ensure continuity in faculty and educational excellence. » Make a gift

Funding supports research, program and scholarly activities, and professional development as they pertain to the College’s research endeavors. » Make a gift

WSU Regional Clinical Simulation Fund

Funding supports the regional clinical simulation labs in both Spokane and Yakima, including equipment, technology, and support staff to sustain the labs. » Make a gift

Annual Scholarship/Loan Fund

Funding supports scholarships and operates as the general scholarship fund. Smaller named scholarship gifts which are not at endowment level are also held in this fund. » Make a gift

Programmatic & Other Funds
Charlene E. Clark Simulation & Practice Centers Fund – Funding supports staffing, equipment, software, and supplies required for new or ongoing services provided by the Simulation & Practice Centers.

Cleveland Visiting Scholars Fund – Named in honor of Dean Emerita Thelma Cleveland, funding supports the premier nursing lectureship in Eastern Washington, providing students and the regional health care community with intensive exposure to international nurse and health care leaders.

Denice Murphy Community Nursing Fund – Funding supports the College’s service and education projects that involve community nursing, the poor and medically underserved, and those affected by breast cancer.

Dean’s Excellence Fund – Funding is used at the dean’s discretion for the College’s most urgent needs in teaching, scholarship, and research. These unrestricted funds enable the dean to act immediately to meet unanticipated needs or opportunities to ensure continuity in faculty and educational excellence.

Designated Development Fund – Funding is given by donors for a “specific purpose.”

Development Director’s Fund – Funding supports donor cultivation, philanthropy, and alumni engagement at the College and is the Development Director’s unrestricted fund.

Downtown Nursing Fund – Funding supports the delivery of nursing care and nursing education in the downtown Spokane area.

Health Informatics Nursing Fund – Funding supports research, program, and scholarly activities related to the use of informatics to improve patient health outcomes.

Jan Holloway Excellence in Clinical Instruction Award Fund – Funding provides a monetary award to a nominated faculty member to recognize excellence in clinical instruction in the undergraduate program.

Library Development Fund – Funding supports the purchase of books, journal subscriptions, reference manuals, and other educational library materials for library sites where nursing is present. Funding also enhances, equipment, gifts, services, and travel as needed for faculty and student education.

Janet S. Lindblad Nursing Excellence Fund – Funding supports scholarship, research, or education-related costs for graduates students and faculty that center around geriatrics/gerontology.

Research Fund – Funding supports research, program and scholarly activities, and professional development as they pertain to the College’s research endeavors.

John McLean Riley, Jr. “Nurses as a Business” Education Fund – Funding provides undergraduate students a mechanism by which nurses can expand their choices in delivery of health care, particularly as they consider operating their nursing careers as their own business entities through utilization of business principles taught within the nursing program and lectures.

WSU Regional Clinical Simulation Fund – Funding supports the regional clinical simulation labs in both Spokane and Yakima, including equipment, technology, and support staff to sustain the labs.

WSU Nursing Faculty Fellowship in Research Fund – Funding supports faculty research activities and/or dissemination through symposiums or other scholarly activities.

Yakima Enrollment Fund – Funding supports the admission of full-time basic nursing students at the Yakima location.

Yakima Nursing Education Fund – Funding supports baccalaureate nursing education in Yakima.

Scholarship & Emergency Loan Funds
Carol Allen & Deborah Swain Global Health Education Fund – Funding supports students wishing to obtain an international learning experience in Peru that have demonstrated financial need.

Earl & Betty Anderson Family Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for MN students with an interest in nursing administration.

Ruth McGillis Bindler, PhD Student Scholar Fund – Funding provides scholarship support for PhD students to foster and sustain scholarly activities.

Acel & Barbara Brown Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships.

Evalyn Johnson Byers Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports BSN and graduate-level scholarships.

Ann Sherman Christian Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need who have completed their first two years at Washington State University.

Catherine Pluym Dalman Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships and participation in professional conferences and meetings.

Deaconess Hospital Nursing Alumnae Association Doris Sage Oxford Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships with a preference to descendants of the Deaconess Diploma nursing program.

Dorothy Detlor Graduate Fellowship in Nursing Education Fund – Funding supports fellowship stipends for dissertation research with a preference to PhD students who are committed to a career as a nursing faculty member.

Karen Johnson Doke Memorial Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for nursing students in Spokane with a preference to students with strong leadership qualities and scholastic achievement. In addition, preference to students interested in cardiac nursing.

Laura C. Dustan Scholarship Fund – Funding supports graduate-level nursing scholarships with demonstrated financial need and a preference to students interested in nursing administration.

Iris Finch Memorial Loan Fund – Funding supports emergency loans for students. Emergency is defined as a “sudden, unexpected event that necessitates an unplanned expenditure of money.” Repayment is requested within a year of graduation.

Carl M. Hansen Foundation Undergraduate Student Scholarship Fund – Funding supports undergraduate scholarships.

Carl M. Hansen Foundation Doctoral Nursing Fund – Funding supports doctoral nursing students with tuition, travel, emergency needs, and dissertation research expenses.

Margaret & Joseph Hinnenkamp Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for full-time students with demonstrated financial need.

Michael & Carol Huebner Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for undergraduate nursing students with a preference to those with demonstrated financial need, those who have completed their first two years at Whitworth University or who are descendants of Whitworth alumni, and to veterans or immediate family members of a veteran of the armed forces.

Ruth Gellert Jackson Endowed Scholarship – Funding supports scholarships for undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.

Dennis and Lowella Jones Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for graduate students with a preference for students with excellent nursing skills and leadership qualities.

Lyn Kaste-Gould Memorial Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for students enrolled at the Spokane campus with selection focused on scholarly performance and commitment to nursing.

Arnie and Marta Kegel Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports BSN scholarships for students who have completed their first two years at Washington State University with demonstrated financial need. Preference is for students from the NW who intend to live and practice in the region.

Ed and Arlene Koetje Scholarship Fund – Funding support scholarships for junior-level BSN students who have completed their first two years at Washington State University, with a preference to students admitted in the lower 5% of the program and who are U.S. citizens.

ICN Graduate Fellowship Fund – Funding supports fellowship stipends for graduate-level nursing students with demonstrated financial need.

Don and Julia Lee Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for BSN students who have completed their first two years at Washington State University.

Amanda Lennick Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for students enrolled at the WSU Tri Cities campus who have a record of community service.

Chris & Susan Marker Family Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for full-time BSN students who have completed their first two years at Washington State University.

Roy and Leona Nelson Foundation – Funding supports scholarships for students residing in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho with demonstrated financial need.

Emma Walther Neusse Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need.

Maggie Perez Scholarship Fund – Funding supports students enrolled at the Yakima campus that are from a disadvantaged background with demonstrated financial need.

Paul and Barbara Redmond Scholarship Fund – Funding supports undergraduate nursing students with demonstrated financial need.

Hilda Boerhave Roberts Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports junior-level nursing students with demonstrated financial need.

HD & Clara Schlotfeldt Emergency Loan Fund – Funding provides emergency loans or scholarships for students enrolled at the Yakima campus. Repayment on emergency loans is requested within a year of graduation.

Scottish Rite Foundation of Washington College of Nursing Scholarship – Funding supports scholarships for full-time students in the MN or DNP programs. Students must be U.S. citizens.

Dino and Dorothy Sivo Nursing Excellence Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships with a preference for undergraduate students.

Kasey Skaggs Nursing Scholarship – Funding supports scholarships for undergraduate nursing students with demonstrated financial need.

Trude Smith Scholarship & Emergency Loan Fund – Funding supports scholarships, along with recruitment and retention of Plateau Tribal Native American students, including the Na-ha-shnee Native American Health Sciences Institute.

St. Luke’s Hospital Nursing Alumnae Association Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for undergraduates with a preference to RN-BSN students.

St. Luke’s Medical Staff Scholarship Fund – Funding support scholarships for undergraduates with a preference for students with strong interpersonal skills.

Patricia Stec Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for senior-level nursing students with excellent clinical skills and with an expressed interest in critical care nursing.

Judith Steward Memorial Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need and selection is based on scholarly performance.

Deborah Swain and Carol Allen Global Health Education Fund – The distributions from this fund shall be used to provide support to the International Health Care Program in Peru. Distributions shall be used to support the educational experience and program expense in support of the faculty led student course. Its intent is to provide program support thereby lowering overall cost to students.

Margaret Embry Sylvies Memorial Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for full-time, undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.

Edna Sackett Thompson Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships for pre-nursing students attending Washington State University with demonstrated financial need and a preference for ethnic minority groups.

Van Gemert Family Nursing Scholarship – Funding supports scholarships for second semester junior-level or first semester senior-level undergraduate students attending the Spokane campus with demonstrated financial need.

George D. and Alice Barnes Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund – Funding supports scholarships, recruitment, books, and supplies.

Health Policy & Administration Funds
Health Policy & Administration Development Fund – Funding supports any common expenditures for the Health Policy and Administration Program.

Center for International Health Services Research & Policy Development Fund – Funding supports any common expenditures for the WSU Center for International Health Services Research & Policy.
