Toshi Shimizu, a nursing student at Washington State University (WSU), shares a personal journey that transcends borders, cultures, and life-changing decisions. Originally from Niigata City, a city on the western side of Japan, Shimizu moved to Spokane for his wife’s job opportunity, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. This new chapter soon included the birth of their daughter in 2010, an event that anchored Shimizu’s family life in the United States.
For several years, Shimizu dedicated himself to his family, staying home with the children until an unprecedented global event shifted his perspective and goals. The outbreak of COVID-19, a crisis that placed healthcare workers at the forefront of combating the pandemic, deeply inspired Shimizu. Witnessing the dedication of doctors and nurses as they put themselves on the line to save lives, Shimizu felt a compelling urge to contribute to the healthcare field. This realization led him to pursue a nursing degree at WSU, a decision that has proven to be both meaningful and transformative.
WSU’s education has significantly impacted Shimizu, highlighting the supportive and passionate nature of its faculty and instructors. Their dedication to teaching and educating has not only fostered Shimizu’s academic growth but has also bolstered his confidence in clinical settings. This nurturing educational environment has allowed Shimizu to feel fortunate about his journey and proud to be a part of WSU Nursing.
As Shimizu progresses towards obtaining his nursing degree, he reflects on the profound sense of purpose that his education at WSU has instilled in him. For Shimizu, becoming a nurse is not just about advancing his career; it’s about contributing to humanity, giving back in ways that extend far beyond individual achievements. His story is a testament to the power of personal transformation and the impactful role that dedicated healthcare professionals play in our society.
