Charis Williams, a student at the WSU College of Nursing in Spokane, shares her journey into the nursing profession, a path inspired by her upbringing in the Yakima Valley and a deeply personal family experience. Growing up in an area with a significant population but limited healthcare resources, Williams was exposed early to the disparities in healthcare access and quality. This environment, coupled with a formative experience involving her younger brother’s health complications at birth, set the stage for her aspirations in nursing.
Williams recalls the profound impact that compassionate, intelligent, and kind nurses had on her family during her brother’s health crisis. It was these qualities in the nurses that cared for her brother that motivated her to pursue a career in nursing, aiming to embody those same characteristics in her professional life.
Fortunate to have been accepted into the College of Nursing, Williams quickly became involved in a research project, an experience that has been both educational and inspiring. Under the guidance of WSU College of Nursing faculty mentors, she has been able to shape her own research questions, contributing to her growth as a nursing student and a future healthcare professional.
Earning her nursing degree from WSU is more than just an academic achievement for Williams; it represents the culmination of her experiences, her dedication to learning, and her desire to make a significant impact in the healthcare industry. With the skills, experience, and tools she is gaining through her education, Williams is poised to make a difference in the lives of many, embodying the compassion, intelligence, and kindness that she admired in the nurses who cared for her brother. Her journey underscores the importance of personal experiences in shaping one’s professional path and highlights the critical role that nurses play in healthcare settings across the globe.
