Research Overview

Workforce science, education and policy focuses on the health, safety, competencies, and performance of various workers across educational, industry, and practice settings. In the College of Nursing, faculty are conducting research in relation to multiple workforces, including nurses, in education and practice settings.

Dr. Denise Smart

Dr. Denise Smart is an academic nurse scientist with a diverse career encompassing roles as a registered nurse, educator, and military public health officer. She served over 22 years in the military, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with the 141st Medical Group at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington. Her dedication to nursing spans more than 45 years.

At Washington State University’s College of Nursing, Dr. Smart has made significant contributions as an educator and mentor. Her research focuses on compassion fatigue, earning her international recognition. She co-developed the Graduate Certificate in Public Health program, which began enrolling students in the fall of 2018. This program addresses the need for trained public health professionals, particularly in rural and underserved areas of Washington.

In 2024, Dr. Smart was honored with the YWCA Women of Achievement Award for Science, Technology, & Environment, acknowledging her extensive contributions to science and health education. Her commitment to nursing, education, and public health continues to have a profound impact on students and the broader community.
