AI & Academic Nursing: Navigating Evolving professional and Organizational Landscapes
October 9, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Artificial intelligence is not new, but its various forms, capabilities, and impacts have accelerated rapidly in recent years. Powerful computational tools once limited to technical specialists are now widely accessible, creating new opportunities and challenges for the academic nursing community.
Dr. Regina Russell, the inaugural Executive Director for AI at Vanderbilt University, launched the “Collaboratively Harnessing AI for Nursing” initiative to promote education and the responsible use of AI among nursing students, faculty, and staff. She will share her experiences researching the AI competencies essential for clinicians, examining how nursing school faculty and staff are using generative AI, and evaluating the quality of AI outputs for administrative tasks.
Dr. Russell will highlight landmarks, potholes, and pointers from her journey to help illuminate the path ahead. Participants will be encouraged to begin developing their own professional strategy and organizational maps for navigating AI in academic nursing.
Outcomes:
- Describe multiple ways that AI is impacting academic nursing
- Develop a professional strategy to navigate AI-driven changes in nursing education
- Map changes across organizational landscapes related to AI and nursing education
