Biography
Dr. Parés-Avila’s career spans over 35 years which started as an AIDS activist in Boston during the 1980s and 1990s with service to communities of color and the LGBTQ communities while he was a behavioral health professional. He is a second-career nurse with BSN. MN, and DNP degrees from the University of Washington. As a nurse, he specialized in HIV care and held the role of HIV NP at a California VA system where he earned HIV Specialist Certification from the American Academy of HIV Medicine. He is founding faculty of the UCDavis School of Nursing and has also served as faculty in the University of Arizona and the University of South Florida where he mentored DNP students on the areas of LGBTQ health and HIV. In 2017 he was inducted as Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and in 2020 he was received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Washington School of Nursing.
