Dr. Sheila Hurst, PhD, RN-CNE is assistant clinical professor at the College of Nursing who has devoted her professional career to addressing social determinants of health and providing care to under-served individuals and communities globally and domestically. She has an extensive background of providing health services to diverse and under-served populations. Dr. Hurst has worked as a volunteer in the Dominican Republic with the United States Peace Corps, as well as, in inner city Baltimore while working with AmeriCorps. As a nurse she has extensive experience providing nursing care to Native Americans while working with the Navajo, Hopi, and Coeur d’Alene tribes. Her clinical nursing is in the area of Labor and Delivery, Post Partum, New Born, Pediatrics, Medical Surgical, Research Nursing, School Nursing, and Nursing Education. She received her doctorate in Nursing Science and was a Jonas Leader Scholar. Her research focuses on stigma and health behaviors, planetary health, nursing education, addressing social determinants of health, and social and environmental justice with consideration for both economic and cultural contexts.
