This Senior Epidemiologist position will provide coordination and communication across DOH on data access and data governance related to Tribal and American Indian/Alaska Native data. You will work to build relationships with Washington State Tribes and Tribal Medical Officers, as well as the American Indian Health Commission, Northwest Tribal Epidemiology Center, Urban Indian Health Institute, and DOH Tribal Policy Director, and Tribal Relations Director.

This position will track tribal concerns related to data, and in collaboration with tribal leaders, Tribal Epidemiology Centers, and American Indian Health Commission staff, identify potential solutions and develop a tribal data policy for DOH. You’ll work closely with the Office of Tribal Health and Relations, as well as the Equity & Social Justice Managers across DOH to support equitable assessment practices, tribal engagement on tribal data, use of new data sources and novel analytic methods.

The incumbent may be located anywhere within the State of Washington. Telework (mobile work) is currently expected. When approved, the incumbent will work with their supervisor to identify an appropriate work schedule and balance, including telework and reporting to the Tumwater, WA duty station for work activities as needed. We anticipate the incumbent will work onsite one day per month and occasionally travel to tribal lands.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities.
  • A Master’s degree or higher in epidemiology, biostatistics, or data science; OR a Master’s degree or higher in public health, or a closely allied field including 12 graduate quarter hours (500 level or above) or equivalent in epidemiology and 12 graduate quarter hours or equivalent in statistics or biostatistics.
  • Two (2) years of experience in epidemiology or disease surveillance.
  • Three (3) years of experience performing complex data analysis with statistical software (R, SAS, Stata, or similar products), and analyzing data and scientific information for planning and decision-making.
    Experience working, volunteering, or navigating tribal governance.
