This interview was conducted by Olivia Lofstedt asking her uncles sister, Jodi Sander, questions from the caregiver point of view. Jodis mom is ____years old and has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for ______ years.
What kinds of movements is your mom currently able to do on a daily basis?
“Daily she is able to walk, while it can be more of a shuffle she can progress in a forward motion and she can move her arms, hands and fingers.”
Have you noticed any specific exercises or movements that help her the most?
“Not anything specifically however listening to music seems to awaken her brain and she wants to move to it.”
What are some of the biggest barriers to exercise that your mom faces?
“Our mom has orthopedic issues in addition to Parkinson’s. So while Parkinson’s symptoms could be mild, orthopedically she could be in a lot of pain and exercise is out of the question.”
What advice would you give to other caregivers of people with Parkinsons?
“Be patient, let the patient try even if their symptoms are causing them to go slow.”
