When most people think of nurse practitioners, family nurse practitioners are the first who come to mind. A second type of nurse practitioner is the future leader of providing mental health care: Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP). These advanced nurse professionals counsel, care for, and treat individuals and families following traumatic situations or facing behavioral/mental health conditions.

Federal grant to support students through nurse practitioner program at WSU

Manuel OrbanaA nurse practitioner degree program at Washington State University will be recruiting six students from underrepresented groups through a new grant from the federal Health Resources & Services Administration.

The two-year grant of $264,000 will allow the WSU College of Nursing to offer financial support to students who are U.S. military veterans, rural-dwelling Hispanics and/or Native Americans to help them become family nurse practitioners.

An Interprofessional Approach to Chronic Care

There is growing recognition that complex health issues are best addressed by interprofessional teams of health care providers. For the past few years, WSU has been providing opportunities for students from different health disciplines to learn and work together. A new grant-funded project is going to take this to the next level while improving care for patients with multiple chronic conditions who live in rural or medically underserved areas.

“This program is really going to let us build out our rural focus to an even greater degree,” said assistant professor of nursing Cindy Fitzgerald, the program director on the project.
