The Opportunity
Join the Department of Health (DOH) in advancing one of the most essential pillars of public health, immunizations. This role provides expert nursing consultation, education, and technical assistance to schools, childcare centers, local health jurisdictions, health care providers, state partners, and coalitions across Washington. Your work ensures communities have accurate, timely, and practical guidance on immunization requirements, clinical practices, and vaccine-preventable disease prevention.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide nursing consultation to schools, preschools, and childcare facilities on immunization requirements.
- Serve as liaison with ESD School Nurse Corps, School Nurses of Washington, OSPI, DCYF, and other education partners to improve communication and support implementation of immunization policy.
- Lead development, review, and updates of school and child care immunization materials and oversee dissemination through listservs, the Fulfillment Center, and DOH websites.
- Provide clinical leadership for the School and Child Care Immunization Information System Module (SCCIM), including forecasting algorithms and validated Certificate of Immunization Status forms.
- Collaborate with policy and planning staff to analyze current and proposed WACs and ensure alignment with recommended immunization practices.
- Offer nursing consultation and education to DOH staff, LHJs, health care providers, schools, childcares, tribes, and families on immunization issues, clinical practices, and vaccine storage and handling.
- Deliver clinical presentations to internal and external audiences to promote prevention of vaccine-preventable diseases.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and maintain engagement in professional organizations to ensure informed, effective representation of DOH.
- Collaborate with health promotion educators (HPE) to develop and update immunization education materials, posters, fliers, and other resources.

Expectations and Responsibilities
- Provide timely, accurate, and clear nursing consultation via phone and email.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state and national immunization guidance.
- Support onboarding and technical assistance for SCCIM users.
- Collaborate across programs, agencies, and external partners to ensure consistent immunization messaging and practice.
- Apply quality improvement tools to strengthen systems and processes.
- Represent DOH in professional organizations, workgroups, conferences, and leadership activities.
- Serve as the official clinical expert of child immunizations for the Office of Immunization.
The Ideal Candidate
You are a skilled public health nurse with deep knowledge of immunization schedules, forecasting, practices and experience working with schools, child care, and clinical partners. You have an enhanced understanding and experience with nursing informatics, working with reporting programs. You excel at explaining complex guidance clearly, building strong relationships, and offering sound clinical recommendations. You’re proactive, collaborative, and committed to ensuring communities have the information they need to protect against vaccine-preventable diseases.
Location and Flexibility
We value work-life balance and offer the convenience of remote work! This position will give you the option to work from home or from the closest DOH facility. Attending in-person events or working In-office is rarely required and would be scheduled in advance. This is a remote home-based position available to applicants residing anywhere in Washington State, as well as those living near the Oregon/Washington border and the Idaho/Washington border.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Option 1: Six (6) or more years of consultative management experience in a health services program or related field.
- Option 2: Bachelor’s degree AND three (3) or more years of consultative management experience in a health services program or related field.
Additional Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience:
- Current Washington State or Multi-State unincumbered Registered Nursing license.
- Three years or more of professional experience in public health nursing as a consultant, administrator, supervisor, or educator in the area of immunizations, vaccine-preventable diseases, and immunization best practices.
- Two or more years of experience managing infectious diseases, public health immunizations or communicable diseases programs.
- Demonstrated ability to assign, prioritize, coordinate, and evaluate work production to meet established guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to re-prioritize as necessary to accomplish high-priority activities.
- Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions, weigh options, consider consequences of decisions, and take responsibility for decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to apply quality improvement tools to improve efficiency, accuracy, and overall quality.
- Cultural competency: Ability to interact with diverse customers and stakeholders, demonstrating cultural, ethnic, and gender sensitivity and competence.
- Demonstrated experience using MS Office software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) at the intermediate level.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the routine childhood immunization schedule.
- Knowledge and understanding of immunization requirements for schools and childcare centers.
- Experience with web-based tools to conduct web-based training to large audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to make effective public presentations.
Preferred/Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience:
- Master’s Degree with a major in nursing, public health, health care administration, public or business administration, or an allied field.
- Two or more years’ experience developing business requirements and using a health information system.
- Two or more years as a school nurse.
- Two or more years’ experience using the WA State Immunization Information System

Conditions of Employment:
This position is covered by a bargaining unit for which the Service Employees International Union Healthcare 1199NW (SEIU) is the exclusive representative.
