Needed: Mentors and Mentees for WCN’s Diverse Nurse Faculty Mentorship Program

Please join the Washington Center for Nursing in an opportunity to strengthen and increase the diversity of the nursing education workforce by helping us recruit mentors and mentees for a diverse nurse faculty mentoring program.

WCN’s mission is to support a healthy Washington by engaging nurses’ expertise, influence, and perspective and by building a diverse, highly qualified nurse workforce to meet future demands. When WCN surveyed nurse faculty in 2017, we found

  • That approximately 40% of nurse faculty planned to retire by 2027
  • That the racial and ethnic diversity of nurse faculty is less than the nursing student population and the population of the state of Washington

The nurse faculty role is an influential nurse leadership role. Research shows that minority nurses in influential leadership roles are more likely to directly influence resource(s) in recruitment, retention of a diverse workforce, and shape national policies aimed at eliminating health disparities (Phillips and Malone, 2014).

Supporting the success of diverse nurse faculty is critical to sustaining the capacity of nursing education and advancing goals of providing more equitable care.

Information about the program, including the time commitment and how to apply, can be found in the attached flyer or on the WCN website.

The application period will be open until December 5, 2021.

Please consider volunteering as a mentor and sharing this announcement among new nurse faculty who would be interested in being a mentee.
