SUMMARY:AI & Academic Nursing: Navigating Evolving professional and Organizational Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is not new\, but its various forms\, capabilities\, and impacts have accelerated rapidly in recent years. Powerful computational tools once limited to technical specialists are now widely accessible\, creating new opportunities and challenges for the academic nursing community. \nDr. Regina Russell\, the inaugural Executive Director for AI at Vanderbilt University\, launched the “Collaboratively Harnessing AI for Nursing” initiative to promote education and the responsible use of AI among nursing students\, faculty\, and staff. She will share her experiences researching the AI competencies essential for clinicians\, examining how nursing school faculty and staff are using generative AI\, and evaluating the quality of AI outputs for administrative tasks. \nDr. Russell will highlight landmarks\, potholes\, and pointers from her journey to help illuminate the path ahead. Participants will be encouraged to begin developing their own professional strategy and organizational maps for navigating AI in academic nursing. \nOutcomes: \n\nDescribe multiple ways that AI is impacting academic nursing\nDevelop a professional strategy to navigate AI-driven changes in nursing education\nMap changes across organizational landscapes related to AI and nursing education\n\nNote: Recording of the webinar will be available soon after the webinar airs. SUMMARY:Advancing a Competency-Based Approach: Threading Policy Through Nursing Curriculum and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Webinar Details\nAs nurses are increasingly called to lead in advocacy\, system change\, and policy development\, it is critical that nursing students graduate with strong policy competencies grounded in both academic and practice-based learning. This webinar features a panel of expert faculty and frontline practitioners who will share strategies for integrating policy across the nursing curriculum using a competency-based education (CBE) framework. \nThe discussion will highlight innovative approaches to connecting policy learning with real-world clinical experiences\, demonstrate how academic-practice partnerships support policy skill development\, and explore why policy literacy is essential to nursing identity and impact. Attendees will leave with concrete ideas for designing meaningful\, competency-driven policy learning experiences that prepare students to lead and influence health outcomes. \nOutcomes:\n\nDevelop practice-based experiences where policy knowledge is applied in real-world context.\nIntegrate policy-related experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum.\nUtilize forms of evidence to assess student engagement\, growth\, and mastery of policy-related competencies.\nEngage students in interdisciplinary or interprofessional policy experiences that build their competency in systems thinking and collaborative leadership.\n\nNote: Recording of the webinar will be available soon after the webinar airs. SUMMARY:ANNOUNCEMENT OF DOCTORAL FINAL EXAMINATION for Christopher Tersigni\, MSN\, RN\, PMH-BC\, CNE
DESCRIPTION:The Experiences of Gay and Bisexual Latino men\nliving with HIV in the Pacific Northwest\n\nDissertation Chair: Dr. Denise Smart\, DrPH\, MPH\, BSN\, RN\, BA\, NHDP-BC \nContact Wendy Ovall for Zoom information. \nAbstract \nGay and bisexual Latino men living with HIV face significant health disparities influenced by intersecting stigmas related to culture\, sexuality\, and HIV status. This qualitative dissertation study explored the lived experiences of 19 Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Pacific Northwest using Giorgi’s Descriptive Phenomenological Method. Through individual interviews and focus groups\, participants described stigma in healthcare\, family\, and community settings—often experiencing compounded discrimination that impacted their mental health\, care-seeking behaviors\, and treatment adherence. \nDespite these barriers\, many demonstrated resilience through advocacy\, chosen family networks\, and culturally grounded coping strategies. Key themes included intersectional stigma\, healthcare access challenges\, familial rejection and support\, mental health impacts\, and structural issues like housing and immigration. \nFindings highlight the need for culturally competent\, stigma-informed nursing care and policy reforms that address systemic inequities. This research adds to the understanding of how intersecting identities shape health outcomes and offers actionable insights for improving care delivery for Latino MSM living with HIV.

SUMMARY:ANNOUNCEMENT OF DOCTORAL FINAL EXAMINATION for Natasha Barrow\, MN\, RN
DESCRIPTION:From Student to Newly Licensed Registered Nurse: A Longitudinal Research on Burnout\, Perceived Stress\, and Intent to Leave\n\nDissertation Chair: Dr. Connie Kim Yen Nguyen Truong\, PhD\, RN\, ANEF\, FAAN \nIn-person presentation at WSU College of Nursing\, Spokane – Room SNRS 119 \nAbstract \nThere is a critical nursing shortage worldwide and newly licensed registered nurses (NLRN) are needed to fill this gap. There are about 150\,000 NLRN graduated per year within the United States. Approximately one out of five NLRN (30\,000) will leave the nursing field after the first year\, and another 1/3 (20\,000) will leave within two years with stress and burnout as the most common contributors to attrition of NLRN. There is a dearth of knowledge on how burnout\, perceived stress\, and generalized health impacts retention of NLRN within the first couple of years post-graduation. \nThis dissertation research examines perceived stress\, burnout\, generalized health\, and intent to leave in pre-licensure nursing students and NLRN via a longitudinal descriptive multi-method design using the Socioecological model as the theoretical framework.  Participants were from associate and bachelor’s degree pre-licensure nursing programs with a total of four cohorts. These cohorts were students who graduated in Fall 2023\, Winter 2024\, and Spring 2024. Quantitative data was collected via surveys at four timepoints: Baseline (Timepoint 1: at the beginning of the final academic term)\, at the end of the final academic term (Timepoint 2)\, three months after graduation (Timepoint 3)\, and 6 months after graduation (Timepoint 4). Qualitative data was collected via individual interviews with key informants. \nArticle one\, published in HPHR journal\, maps out the methodology for data organization\, collection\, and real time data analysis\, and utility of trackers for clear\, concise\, and real-time communication. Manuscript two reports on the quantitative survey study comparing levels of burnout\, perceived stress\, and generalized health at the beginning of the academic term and at the end of the academic term. This report is also on perceived stress\, burnout\, generalized health\, and intent to leave at 3-months and 6-months post-graduation. Manuscript 3 reports on the qualitative study about perceptions and experiences of burnout and stress and intent to leave the workforce. \n\nThese research studies add to the literature in having assessed burnout\, perceived stress\, and intent to leave from a longitudinal multi-method lens following participants as pre-licensure nursing students to NLRN.
