Rural-Urban Disparities in Healthcare Costs and Utilization for Pediatric Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), or concussions, are prevalent injuries, many of which are treated in outpatient settings. This presentation will summarize healthcare costs and health services utilization associated with mTBI among rural and urban children, in order to capture rural-urban disparities. In this presentation, Dr. Graves will describe two studies. One using commercial insurance claims data to compare healthcare costs and specialty care utilization after mTBI among rural and urban children (aged <18 years), and another that used key informant interviews to elicit economic burden information from families.  She will discuss use of administrative data for research, identifying study cohorts, use of propensity score weighting, and multivariable approaches to examine heteroskedastic cost and utilization outcomes.
