Electronic Reserves/Required ReadingsLibrary Reserves- Finding and Using Required ReadingsAll required readings for each course and independent study packet are listed on separate pages, one for each course and one for each packet. This page tells you how to find and use them. Many required readings are available in electronic form, so you may read them away from the building or when the library is not open. These readings may be printed or read on the screen. Access is always available through the Reserves Link on the Library Home Page , and may also be available as a link from inside your online course. The Main Course Index allows searching by Department (Nursing will show you all nursing courses), Course Name, Catalog Number (e.g., Nursing Leadership or 405), and by faculty member (e.g., Bindler or O'Brien). You may need to change the number of items which display (choose 250) to see everything. You may use one of the tabs to search for words in the title of a document, like “latex” or “allergy”. Selecting a course entry like Nurs 504 or Methods of Nursing Research takes you to a login page, where you must enter a password. Each course has its own password. Faculty members distribute them at the beginning of each semester. Do not give the password to anyone not in your course. The password gives access to copyrighted material which is posted only for students taking a specific course. The reading lists for the independent study packets use one common password each semester, because all students in nursing may use any packet at any time. Ask the practice laboratory preceptors or the library staff for this password. The password for each course is not the same as the one used for all the packets. Once you've entered the password and acknowledged the Copyright Announcement, you'll see a list, alphabetically by title, of all the readings the Library has as required for that course. Books, journal issues, and photocopies are listed with the library holding them. Some items are available electronically. Select one of these and an electronic document, usually pdf or html, will download. Large documents may take a long time to load over a slow internet connection. Please have patience - your faculty members tell us the readings are essential! Sometimes you'll be sent to a copy we've scanned in, sometimes to the publisher's website with the article. You'll be able to read the item, and print or save it using your browser or Acrobat software features. If you run into difficulties, get help by emailing Bob Pringle or the Nursing Library, the College's IT help, or call the library at 509-358-7930. Your computer software setup, Internet Service Provider, and connection can all make significant differences in how quickly you can access this information reliably and efficiently.
