CINAHL: Cumulative Index for Nursing and
Allied Health - via EBSCO
CINAHL is the definitive database for nursing and
allied health. The database is also available on
the left menu of this website under Library as:
Find
Articles and Magazines at WSU. You'll need to
choose it from a list, or search for it by name,
or choose the "Nursing" subject to see the list
of recommended databases. When searching
from off-campus, you'll use your network ID to
log on to any WSU database or electronic journal.

Helpful steps for CINAHL
database
- Start search for CINAHL by selecting
"Databases A to Z".
- Type in "CINAHL" in the Title box then
select
- Select "CINAHL (EBSCO)".
- Enter search terms in the "Find" boxes.
You may use free-text terms, like (computer
OR information) and literacy , or,
for best results, use the
button to choose exact
nursing terms.
- Change the box labels
to
search for authors, journal titles, etc.
- Lower down the screen, use the
Refine Search area which offers ways
to improve and limit results.
- For best results you can use the lines for
MH Exact Subject Heading or
MJ Word in Major Subject
Heading to find and add index
headings like “computer literacy” or
“Informatics” or
“diabetes”, etc., from the
- Choose from the list of arrowed boxes
to focus your search; we
recommend the ones below.
- To find Research Articles, or other specific
kinds of articles: Select Publication
Type. In the
box
to the right, select “Research” (or
another type).
- You may choose a Journal
Subset, like "Core Nursing". This
includes many of the print journals in our
library.
- Press the
button to run the search.
View the results (the "Results" tab opens); your
search terms appear on the "Refine Search" tab so
you can modify your terms and improve the
results. Search terms also appear on
the "Search History/Alerts" tab.
- Some citations include links to the full text
of the article, as part of the database.
Many others have a link to our subscription to
the journal using
.
- Save citations and/or articles in a single
"marked" folder by clicking on "Add" at the right
of each citation. Then view, print,
save to disk, or e-mail the contents of the
folder.
- When finished, please go to the top of the
page to click on
or close the window. That
opens a database port for another user.
