CINAHL Guide

CINAHL: Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health - via EBSCO

CINAHL is the definitive database for nursing and allied health. The database is also available on the left menu of this website under Library as: Find Articles and Magazines at WSU. You'll need to choose it from a list, or search for it by name, or choose the "Nursing" subject to see the list of recommended databases.  When searching from off-campus, you'll use your network ID to log on to any WSU database or electronic journal.

Get started:  Tutorials available from CINAHL/EBSCO:

Basic CINAHL (runtime 4.5 minutes)

Advanced CINAHL (runtime 8.5 minutes)

and from the University of Florida

Helpful steps for CINAHL database

  1. Start search for CINAHL by selecting "Databases A to Z".
  2. Type in "CINAHL" in the Title box then select  Go
  3. Select "CINAHL (EBSCO)".
  4. Enter search terms in the "Find" boxes.  You may use free-text terms, like (computer OR information) and literacy , or, for best results, use the   CINAHL headings button to choose exact nursing terms.
  5. Change the box labels to search for authors, journal titles, etc.
  6. Lower down the screen,  use the Refine Search  area which offers ways to improve and limit results.
  7. For best results you can use the lines for MH Exact Subject Heading or MJ Word in Major Subject Heading  to find and add index headings like “computer literacy” or “Informatics” or “diabetes”, etc., from the  CINAHL headings
  8. Choose from the list of arrowed boxes    to focus your search; we recommend the ones below.
  9. To find Research Articles, or other specific kinds of articles: Select Publication Type.  In the box to the right, select “Research” (or another type).
  10. You may choose a Journal Subset, like "Core Nursing".  This includes many of the print journals in our library.
  11. Press the Searchbutton to run the search.  View the results (the "Results" tab opens); your search terms appear on the "Refine Search" tab so you can  modify your terms and improve the results.   Search terms also appear on the "Search History/Alerts" tab.
  12. Some citations include links to the full text of the article, as part of the database.  Many others have a link to our subscription to the journal using Find it at WSU.
  13. Save citations and/or articles in a single "marked" folder by clicking on "Add" at the right of   each citation. Then view, print, save to disk, or e-mail the contents of the folder.
  14. When finished, please go to the top of the page to click on WSU Librariesor close the window. That opens a database port for another user.
