Caring for Humankind

Growing up in a small Kenyan village, Patrick Muturi had to run an hour each way just to get to and from school. Two bachelor's degrees later - both from WSU - Muturi credits running for his new ability to care for others as a recent graduate of the WSU College of Nursing.

Muturi arrived at WSU in the 1990's on an athletic scholarship. He completed his first bachelor's degree in international business, served in the U.S. military, obtained U.S. citizenship, and turned professional marathoner before deciding to attend the WSU College of Nursing.

"I owe a lot of thanks, especially to the private donors whom I may never meet again," he said. "Because of their generosity, I have the opportunity to change people's lives. It is because of their support that people like me have the opportunity to obtain the skills to restore health, physically, mentally, and spiritually to those who hurt."

Muturi is inspired by the funding and support he received over the past 14 years. "I plan to share my blessings with those who don't have as much, doing short-term medical missions in Third World countries," he said. "It is important to respect and honor humankind regardless of social and economic status. It is time to give back."
